Are there any plans to allow the use of Github as the deployment target?

Yes is the answer, it’s on the list.
In the meantime you should be able to publish via the built-in git solution or via GitLab SaaS, the latter can be used to power the major static page provides like CloudFlare pages.
Our use-case for GitHub is SaaS platforms that don’t support GitLab, if you have any other specific use-cases for GitHub do-let us know as it might help tweak it’s priority in our task list
